show your detroit pride with this sturdy joe louis tote bag, part of our notable detroit series! our totes are perfect for toting books, records, groceries or whatever else you need to carry. joe louis barrow (May 13, 1914 – April 12, 1981) moved to detroit when he was 12. at 16, louis' mother gave him money for violin lessons but instead he got a locker at the gym where amateur boxers trained. he went on to have an illustrious career and held the heavyweight boxing title for longer than anyone else before or after him. he is regarded by many as the greatest fighter of all time and during world war II, "the brown bomber" became a national hero, in part because of his series of fights against german max schmeling. in 1982 he was awarded the congressional gold medal. he coined the phrase "he can run, but he can't hide." the bag itself is from american apparel and made of high-quality natural bull denim cotton.
